Shoreline Readers

Preschool-Kindergarten

Early Readers is a kindergarten-readiness group run by a licensed speech-language therapist. Narrative skills (a child’s ability to retell a story) are targeted in conjunction with increasing a child’s ability to engage, build and maintain relationships with same-aged peers. Current research indicates that retelling stories serves as the bridge from oral language to written language (reading and writing) and is a strong indicator of school success. Early Readers incorporates age-appropriate and carefully selected books into the routine of the class. We improve children’s oral and written language skills by revisiting familiar material while developing the social skills necessary for kindergarten success

1st Grade to High School

At Shoreline’s Act Up! children participate in a traditional improvisational and scene study acting class run by a specially trained speech-language pathologist (SLP) or speech-language therapy assistant (SLPA) to help children address their social skills with an emphasis on speech and language development. The speech-language pathologist runs the class like a typical acting class while ensuring each student’s speech and language needs are addressed. Students develop acting skills through traditional theatre games and improvisational scene study while simultaneously addressing essential skills needed for success in social and pragmatic skills.
